Kelvin Taylor

Designer and Printmaker

Holding a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Visual Communication from Sydney College of the Arts, I have always held an interest in the creative arts and have been working in the field of design for over 35-years. The majority of my design work has been based in the built environment creating spaces to enhance the user experience. With the encouragement of my wife to find a more creative outlet I have been studying printmaking at Hazelhurst Community Arts Centre at Gymea in Sydney and haven’t looked back.

Over the past 8 years I have developed my printmaking across a number of mediums including solar plate, collagraph and reduction linocut and have held exhibitions in Sydney and the NSW south coast. Printmaking series exhibited have ranged from the politically driven ‘VOICE’ series, to the popular culture ‘Power+Pop’ series based on celebrity mugshots, and the current introspective series ‘Soul Courageous’.

It is my hope that people viewing my work can add their own interpretation and find some meaning for themselves as well as add some colour and joy to their day.

Soul Courageous is the most recent exhibition shown at Fern Street Gallery, Gerringong in May 2019. The exhibition was a more personal introspective and primarily adopts the reduction linocut printmaking process. The intention behind the series was to make the work more accessible to the audience in both scale, subject matter and style with the work taking on a bold use of colour and reflecting influences from the post-expressionist and fauve periods with primitivism and poster design influences of the 1960’s and 70’s.

Kelvin lives in the Shoalhaven district two hours south of Sydney with his wife Kim and an array of animals and works from his printmaking studio at Waymount Farm, a 50-acre property that provides a wonderful backdrop for creativity and reflection. Since 2002 Kim and Kelvin have lovingly refurbished the property with a long-term vision of facilitating trauma recovery and creative workshops and residential programs.

Pending development approval Kelvin will host printmaking workshops and creative programs from the property commencing in 2020/2021. Catering for a maximum of six people as a residential live-in program over two days, participants will enjoy structured yet casual printmaking tuition and experience the beauty and luxury of the Waymount Farm property and the surrounds of the Shoalhaven countryside.
